Big Four back Burns with Simon Howie Gluten Free Haggis
Scottish family butcher Simon Howie has chosen St Andrew’s Day to announce that the big four supermarket chains (Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda (SCOTLAND ONLY)) will stock the world’s first widely-available gluten free haggis ahead of Burns Night.
Simon Howie’s new gluten-free haggis will be available in supermarkets and for all his food service customers, ranging from local pubs and restaurants to five-star hotels and food distributors, from next month.
Simon Howie said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of the world’s first widely-available gluten free haggis. I’m passionate about the food we produce and delighted that we’ve extended the range to allow more people to enjoy it.”
It is estimated that the gluten-free haggis, which will be offered for sale in the same 454g format as the ever-popular vegetarian haggis and the world’s best-selling haggis, the Simon Howie Original haggis, will equate to in excess of £300,000 of business in the year ahead out of more than £3 million of total haggis sales for the year.
“The ‘free from’ food sector is growing rapidly as more and more consumers become increasingly discerning about the food they eat,” said Howie. “And while there is a significant demand for gluten-free foods from coeliacs, we are also confident that this new product will appeal to a wider number of healthy eaters.
“Crucially, our gluten free haggis tastes just as good as our original best-selling product. The taste, texture, bite and the look of the gluten-free version are the equal of our original haggis.
And just as many of our customers choose our vegetarian haggis because they like the taste of it, not because they’re necessarily vegetarians, we’re confident that many customers will choose our gluten free haggis as simply another delicious alternative!”
Customers will be able to sample the range of Simon Howie haggis, including the new gluten-free haggis, on Burns Tours at both Tesco and Morrisons throughout January in the lead up to Burns Night.
