Why Is Haggis Banned in the USA?

Picture the scene. You’re heading to the World Cup. Saltire over your shoulders. Face paint on. Bag packed. Passport? Check. Match ticket? Check. Emergency haggis? …absolutely not.
Because for more than 50 years, traditional Scottish haggis and the USA have had a bit of a complicated relationship.
And no, before anyone asks, it’s not because America tasted it and said, “Absolutely no thank you.”
It’s actually down to one very specific ingredient.

An Offal Situation

Traditional haggis recipes contain a mixture of oatmeal, seasoning and offal — including heart, liver and lungs. That lung bit is where things become a touch awkward.
Back in 1971, American regulations banned lungs from being used in food products intended for human consumption, over concerns about fluids entering the lungs during processing.
And just like that…
No lungs = no traditional haggis.
Which effectively meant:
No haggis = no party.
(We may be paraphrasing the legal wording slightly.)

But Hang On… Is Haggis Dangerous?

Not at all.
Millions of portions of haggis are enjoyed every year across Scotland and around the world. Haggis isn’t sitting in a dark alley wearing sunglasses and causing trouble. It’s sitting proudly beside neeps and tatties, minding its own business.
The issue isn’t really haggis itself; it’s the American regulations around one specific ingredient in the traditional recipe. Lungs.

Have People Tried To Fix It?

Oh aye.
Over the years, there have been campaigns, discussions, hopeful headlines and plenty of Scottish folk keeping fingers crossed that haggis might one day make a triumphant return across the Atlantic. There have even been efforts to create versions that comply with US rules.
Because if there’s one thing Scotland doesn’t do, it’s give up easily.

Our Official Position

We think it’s time the world had easier access to Scotland’s greatest culinary gift.*
*No offence to shortbread. Or whisky. Or square sausage.
So if you ever hear someone say “Haggis is banned in America”, now you know the truth.
It’s not a haggis problem.
It’s a lung problem.
And frankly, that’s been the case for too long already. It’s time to make a change.
