While ham hough can be used in a variety of dishes, the most popular is undoubtedly as a hearty and flavoursome ingredient to homemade soup.
IMPORTANT – This is a RAW product and must be fully cooked prior to consumption.
BOIL: Three quarters fill a large pan with boiling water.
Remove all packaging and carefully place the ham hough into the water making sure it is completely submerged. Place a lid on the pan and bring the water back to the boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 2 hours. The hough is cooked properly once the meat is tender enough to remove from the bone with no resistance. Once cooked, carefully remove from the water. Place on a chopping board and cool for a few minutes before removing the meat from the bone.
The ham stock left in the pan can be saved and used as the base for a hearty soup.
Use the boiled ham hough in soups, stews, casseroles, or simply enjoy with potatoes and a salad.
