Bacon.  It’s universally iconic.  And we love it!  But if, like us, you’re a bit of a genu-swine connoisseur of all things bakey!  Here are seven weird bacon facts you probably didn’t know.

The Weird Stuff

  • Bacon has ancient origins! It’s one of the oldest processed meats in history.  The Chinese began salting pork back in 1500 BC.
  • Bacon is tre-moon-dous!  Yes.  It’s even made it to the moon! Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin chose bacon, sugar cookies, and coffee as their first moon landing meal.
  • A United Church of Bacon really exists! Compromising 25,000 members with one commandment, and that is to ‘Praise Bacon!’.  The church even performs wedding ceremonies.
  • During WW2, US troops collected bacon fat and used it to manufacture the chemical glycerol.  A known ingredient used in explosives!
  • Book your tickets to Camp Bacon! Because it actually exsists. Bacon obsessives gather every year at Zingermanns Camp Bacon for a five-day extravaganza! Including The Bacon Ball, Bacon Film Fest, Bacon Street Fair, tastings, and more!
  • The word bacon or “bacoun” was a Middle English term used to refer to all pork in general.  The term bacon comes from various Germanic and French dialects. It derives from the French bako, Old High German bakko, and Old Teutonic backe, all of which refer to the back of the pig.
  • Bacon is super addictive! It produces six types of umami. Which translates from Japanese as “a pleasant, savoury taste!”.  This taste sensation produces an addictive response in the brain which has us hankering for more BACON!
